Course Overview

A first for South Africa, this two-day course is aimed at veterinary surgeons who have attended our basic and next level ultrasound courses before and/or feel confident in their basic ultrasound skills. If you are comfortable with the sonographic assessment of the liver, spleen, kidneys and bladder and have ventured into more intermediate scanning, this course is for you.

This course will help you gain the knowledge and practical skills to develop your ultrasound examinations of the small animal abdomen further. Through a mixture of lectures and hands-on scanning time, you will learn the practical approaches to ‘the trickier bits’. Techniques for scanning the adrenals, pancreas, abdominal lymph nodes and abdominal vasculature will be taught, as well as the assessment of the gastro-intestinal and urogenital tracts to an advanced level. Areas such as the chest, neck and selected musculoskeletal areas will also be included.

The course will be taught by Dr Nicolette Hayward BVM&S DVR DipECVDI MRCVS. As with all our courses we pride ourselves on our practical content, and dynamic and approachable teachers.

Course objectives

  • Advanced gastro-intestinal scanning techniques – focus will be made on the ‘tricky bits’ such as the pylorus, ileocaecocolic junction and pancreas.
  • Ultrasound examination of the adrenal glands and abdominal lymph nodes.
  • Approach to the abdominal vasculature, with application to an introduction to the ‘shunt hunt’,
  • Improving your urogenital scanning, including identification of the uretero-vesicular junctions
  • Approach to scanning novel areas such as non-cardiac thoracic, orthopaedic and cervical regions.
  • The practicalities and current thought on ultrasound guided sampling techniques.

Time : 08h30 – 16h30

Equipment and Facilities

IMV imaging will provide all the necessary ultrasound equipment. We will also provide lunch for attendees.

Attendees are asked to please bring with a volunteer dog to scan in the practical sessions.

**Without volunteer animals to scan, the practical sessions are pretty dull! No invasive procedures will be performed on the animals, we treat them with love and care throughout the practical sessions.**
