Course Overview

A new course in the South African market, offering a refreshing take on a practical introduction to basic echocardiography. Technological advances have put basic competence in an echocardiographic approach well within the reach of first opinion practitioners.

This course is based on IMV’s popular, tried-and-tested courses in the UK and will leave you feeling confident in generating basic views of the heart, ‘eye-balling’ common conditions in 2D, and applying one’s findings in the context of general practice. This one-day course is aimed at veterinary surgeons with little or no experience of echocardiography and those who feel they could make much more of their cardiac examinations.

The day will be a mixture of lectures, demonstrations and practical sessions, with emphasis on getting as much hands-on time as possible. We pride ourselves on our approachable, dynamic teachers and practical content, which will help you gain the confidence to start applying your new skills as soon as you get back to the practice.

Course objectives:

  • Basics of ultrasound physics refresher – how ultrasound works, the limitations, how to work the machine and how to optimize the cardiac image.
  • The role and indications for echocardiography in small animal practice.
  • Brief physiology refresher, and introduction to Doppler, how to use it correctly.
  • Repeatably generating and interpreting basic right-sided echocardiographic views.
  • Echocardiography in context; the role of echocardiography in diagnosis and management using case studies and examples.

Equipment and Facilities

IMV imaging will provide all the necessary ultrasound equipment.

**Please note that because of the difficulty providing animals for scanning, delegates are kindly requested to bring a friendly dog with them for the duration of the day. It is important that the dogs can be clipped as appropriate for a complete cardiac ultrasound exam.**
